[Robert L Miller; John T Wilson; Indiana. Department of Transportation.; Geological Survey (U.S.)]. Twenty bridge sites in Indiana were evaluated to determine: the extent of scour during floods, streambed stability, the maximum historical scour, and estimates of potential scour.

Because funding and resources for detailed field reviews, scour evaluation studies, and implementing onsite scour countermeasures will be limited, the objective of Step 1b is to recognize that some Forest Service bridges and major culverts will have a much lower priority, regardless of the bridge’s scour vulnerability rating.

Bridge scour is the removal of sediment such as sand and gravel from around bridge abutments orcaused by swiftly moving water, can scoop out scour holes, compromising the integrity of a structure.

In the United States, bridge scour is one of the three main causes of bridge failure (the others being collision and overloading). It has been estimated that 60% of all. (a) observed scour at the bridge site or (b) a scour potential as determined from a scour evaluation study.
